Via Tejakula to Kintamani
The best sights to be seen in this area are a combination of two places: Mount Batur and Lake Batur . From Penelokan we are able to admire the majestic (and still active) volcano and see the sparkling blue waters of the lake. Batur is located in the Kintamani district about 32 km from the main town of Bangli , surrounded by lovely green hills where the air is fresh and cool.
Batur Temple , commonly called Ulun Danu Temple , is located 900 metres above sea level near Kalanganyar Batur village Kintamani District on the eastern side of the main road leading to Denpasar or Singaraja via Bangli . The temple faces west ward where Mount Batur and remains of its solidified black lavas serve as backdrop. Lake Batur stretches far down the slope, enhancing the beauty of nature around the temple. In former times, Batur Temple was located on the north eastern slope of Mount Batur until in 1917 a devastating eruption of the volcano destroyed everything including the temple itself. Initiated by the head of the village along with other prominent figures, Batur Temple was rebuilt at Kalanganyar , its present location. The shrines of the original temple which were still intact were brought there.
Still an active volcano, Mount Batur ‘s peak is 1.500 metres above sea level. Smoking and rumbling takes place periodically at this mountain. Eruptions occurred in 1917, 1926 and, more recently, in 1994. A crater lake was formed after a major eruption about 30,000 years ago. Many vantage points offer spectacular views of the area.
On the way to Toya Bungkah you can enjoy nice mountain and lake panoramas. East of the road to Toya Bungkah is a big temple called Pura Jati.
Toya Bungkah belongs to the Batur village area on the slope of Batur Mountain and is located at the western shore of Batur Lake . There is a hot spring at Toya Bungkah where the locals bathe since they believe that the water heals skin diseases. There are two hot pools – one for the locals and another one surrounded by walls for foreign and Indonesian tourists.
It has an excellent view to the blue Batur Lake and the original Village of Trunyan surrounded by green hills at the East Side of the lake. (entrance fee not included)
Because of the nice panorama and the cool air, the Indonesian poet Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana chose Toya Bungkah to build an art hall called “BALAI SENI TOYA BUNGKAH”. Toya Bungkah attracts many foreign and Indonesian visitors who want to climb Mount Batur, do camp out, take a bath in the hot spring or just enjoy the panorama.
