This month has been full of celebrations and ceremonies here in Bali.
The ceremonies started on the 28th of February with Galungan, a holiday celebrating the victory of good over evil. Families gather at their local temples to pray and make offerings to the gods to welcome their ancestral spirits into their family compounds, and the streets are decorated with colorful flags and penjors – tall bamboo poles adorned with leaves, flowers, and fruit. The festivities continue for ten days and culminate in Kuningan, when the family spirits are believed to return to heaven after visiting their earthly homes.
Then, on the 11th of March, we celebrated Nyepi, the Day of Silence, and the Balinese New Year. All activity on the island comes to a complete halt. No one is allowed outside, no lights are turned on, and the airport shuts down for 24 hours. Nyepi is meant to be a day of self-reflection, and the Balinese believe that by staying silent and keeping darkness, evil spirits will think the island is deserted and won’t disturb their peace. A day of silence has a soothing effect on the nervous system, and it’s a beautiful reminder to take a break from our busy lives and appreciate the present moment. The only noises heard on Nyepi are the sounds of nature, and the only lights at night are from the starry sky above. It’s a unique experience to see an entire island in complete stillness and a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the natural world and reflect on life.
And that’s not the end of the celebrations…
The island of Bali is known for its strong and fully intact cultural beliefs and ceremonies fused with openness and religious tolerance, so March also celebrates Easter and the start of the month of Ramadan, which culminates in Idul Fitri. Looking ahead – on the 10th of April, the Muslim community visits their families and friends to break their Ramadan fast together.
