Summer has arrived for those in the Northern Hemisphere, and although it is technically ‘winter’ here in Bali – it simply means cooler evenings and mornings with typically clear skies, warm temperatures, calm waters, and sunny days – and as always, we are excited to welcome you to our tropical paradise (any time of year)! For those looking to join us for a world-class scuba diving getaway, you will find some new friendly faces in our Dive Center to greet you..

Meet our New Dive Center Managers & Instructors

We are excited to introduce the newest members of the Siddhartha Family – Katharina Huber and Sandra Haingartner. With over 16 years of combined experience teaching scuba diving, Katharina and Sandra are both passionate divers who have taken on the roles of managing our dive center and teaching onsite courses, as well as sharing their knowledge and love for the oceans and marine life with our guests.

This Austrian super duo met while working together in the Maldives, but they both have extensive diving experience in various locations worldwide.

Sandra has worked as a dive instructor in the Maldives, Philippines, Komodo, and Thailand. Her favorite marine creatures are Manta Rays. ‘Manta Rays are the most elegant and graceful animals in the ocean – every individual is unique and can be identified by the pattern on their underside. I believe that Manta Rays can recognize people and come closer when they feel trust in a human being.’ Even after seeing many underwater, she still gets goosebumps when they appear. Aside from mantas, Sandra enjoys all the small critters that can be found on the dive sites around Siddhartha.

Katharina has experience teaching in Greece and Austria, as well as the Maldives. Having done her instructor course and training in Bali, this is a special place for her to return to. Katharina loves to spot octopuses in the reef. ‘As masters of disguise, it is sometimes difficult to spot them as they change color and shape in the blink of an eye. Octopuses are very playful – did you know that they have three hearts and nine brains?’ Interacting with one of the most intelligent and behaviorally diverse creatures is just pure bliss for her – and she’ll be getting to meet all our resident species very soon!

August in Bali – Indonesian Independence Day Celebrations

August 17 is a special day for all Indonesians as they celebrate Indonesia’s declaration of independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1945. Independence Day serves as a reminder of the unity and resilience of the Indonesian people in their fight for sovereignty and an opportunity for all to come together and celebrate their shared history and heritage. 2024 marks the 79th anniversary.

Throughout August, visitors to Bali will see the streets and family compounds decorated with red and white Indonesian flags and school children rehearsing in the streets for their parades on the big day. Some unique activities to look out for are:

Lomba Makan Kerupuk (Cracker Eating Races)

A Krupuk is a local cracker and they’re hung on a thread and then the competitors have their hands tied behind their backs and must eat as many crackers as possible in the time allowed. The meaning of this game is a reminder of the hard times they lived in poverty during the colonial period.

Panjat Pinang (Pole Climbing)

Prizes are placed at the top of the pole, and the first to climb the pole may claim a prize. The meaning of this game is a reminder of the effort to gain freedom from colonialism.

Lomba Balap Karung (Goni Sack Race)

Using a sack, participants must jump their way to reach the finish line. The meaning of this game is a reminder of the importance of perseverance and the efforts to gain independence, and also that in life we fall but we have to get up and continue to achieve our goals.
