Bali is rich in different cultures and traditions. While the island’s predominant religion is Hinduism, Christmas time is still associated with giving and gratitude. Many local Balinese Christians and Catholics take part in Ngejot, a tradition where people cook and share food (that caters to the religion of each person) with their neighbors as a way to build unity, and friendship and show their appreciation.

You’ll also find the local take on a Christmas tree, the Penjor, long curved bamboo poles that are decorated in many parts of the island at this time of year. Penjor are one example of how different cultural traditions merge and adapt here on the island. These decorated bamboo poles also line the streets during other religious ceremonies and festivities throughout the year.

Book Siddhartha’s Yoga Studio for Private Retreats
