Recycling, Reducing and Reef Rejuvenation this Earth Day & Every Day

“Take only photos, leave only footprints (or bubbles).”

While environmental protection should be practiced every day, Earth Day on April 22nd is an important global reminder about preserving our planet.

This year’s Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet,” which is something we’ve been doing since we first welcomed guests to this remote area of the island. In a bid to both protect and share the beauty of East Bali we’ve rolled out a range of different initiatives. Here are some of the highlights:

Creating our own waste management system when there was no local system in place:

With our secluded location, off the main tourist route, we couldn’t tap into an existing recycling system – so we made our own. There is no single-use plastic on-site and guests are offered free refills for their reusable water bottles throughout the property. All trash is sorted, separated and picked up by locally-based partners who process and transport any waste to appropriate recycling facilities. We’ve also found a novel use for all our kitchen waste…

Introducing a 360° food concept:

We compost all food and garden waste and use the compost in our raised vegetable garden beds. We have over 120 meters of thriving produce gardens, abundant in eggplant, bok choy, and zucchini, and with dragon fruit and bananas currently growing. Our area is known for its highly acidic soil, which is not very good for gardening, so we developed our own soil mix (through a bit of trial and error) and now we have a system from garden to plate to garden again.

Regeneration of local marine wildlife and rebuilding biodiversity in the ocean:

The popular saying may be, “Take only photos, leave only footprints,” or bubbles in our case, but we wanted to do more than just leave the ocean as we found it. We wanted to help create underwater sanctuaries for diverse marine species, regenerate coral, and help the surrounding community understand the importance of protecting the world beneath the waves. We started the Kubu Marine Park in 2011, laying the foundations for an artificial reef (which also allowed us to creatively use some discarded man-made objects) and working with the local community, wherever possible, to raise eco-awareness and clean-up the area. Our house reef is now thriving. Divers and snorkelers may encounter turtles, leaf fish, schools of trevally fusiliers and sweetlips and more. There’s also the occasional reef tip shark or eagle ray, who now enjoy the protected area.

Protecting the ocean involves being mindful of what goes down the drain:

For our in-room toiletries we work with Sensatia, a 100% natural Bali-based brand that has tapped nature for its product lines. The island’s biggest natural skincare chain is Bali’s first and only GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certified cosmetic company, meaning that the company can trace every single material that moves in and out of the facility.

Rejuvenation and relaxation in the newly expanded yoga studio

As much as we enjoy being in the sea we also appreciate looking over it. At our newly expanded yoga studio (that is now twice the size) guests can do just that, taking in majestic sunrises and unobstructed water views while working on a sense of inner calm and relaxation through our free daily classes at this open-air pavilion.

The space is also now bookable for private retreats, with the ability to cater for up to 30 people. Our area enjoys a slower pace of life, distinct from some of the more busier parts of the island, and introduces a more traditional and authentic side of the island. Secluded and peaceful, our property is ideal for hiring out for wellness retreats. If you’re a retreat organizer more information is available upon request.
