Bali is not just a destination but a place to immerse in vibrant culture. This September 23rd and October 5th, witness the island come alive and experience the island’s unique heritage through Galungan and Kuningan – two of Bali’s most significant religious celebrations. These celebrations offer a rare opportunity to witness Bali’s unique spiritual life and connect with the island’s deep-rooted traditions. We invite you to join us in experiencing the beauty and significance of these celebrations during your stay.
Galungan marks the time when ancestral spirits visit the earth. This day symbolizes the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil). In the days leading up to Galungan, Balinese families prepare for the arrival of these spirits by cleaning and decorating their homes, creating intricate offerings, and crafting towering bamboo poles known as penjor, which are placed in front of homes and temples, lining the streets in a vibrant display of devotion and creativity. The island comes alive with colorful processions, traditional gamelan music, and dances that tell stories of ancient gods and demons. It’s a time of togetherness, where families come together to honor their ancestors and seek blessings for the future.
Kuningan, celebrated ten days later, marks the closing of the Galungan period. It is believed that on this day, the spirits return to their heavenly homes. Special offerings made of yellow rice and turmeric are prepared as a symbol of gratitude and respect. The rituals of Kuningan are a final farewell to the ancestral spirits, filled with prayers and ceremonies that ensure harmony and balance in the world.
